Y’all are probably thinking that it’s too early for another episode of “just rants”, lol if you ain’t thinking it I am. It’s a few things that gets me riled up, lol if there were 100 things that infuriates me 97 of them is related to Nigeria. If y’all have noticed, I barely talk or write about Nigerian politics because once I think of it I get so angry. The sad part is that there would be nothing to do with all that anger, so I don’t watch the news and don’t talk about politics it has a way of sapping the joy from you and just makes you so bitter. Lol I just exist in Nigeria that is the safest way to live in Nigeria, it baffles me when I see people get in heated arguments or fight because of Nigeria.
The problems of Nigeria is too deep, no argument or discussion can solve it. One day I “mistakenly” listened to the news with my dad, I have forgotten what started the argument but we were arguing (I know I said it baffles me why people argue lol you would find why I got involved soon). So my dad said “this generation (he meant our generation) are spoiling our country, when they are so disobedient”, and i said it was all the fault of their generation and our country has been spoiled from the very beginning. My dad said “my generation did nothing”, exactly y’all just take what is thrown at you, y’all are just ass kissers. They actually had it easy, my mum got a job with NEPA in those days when she was 16 with her secondary school leaving certificate, she grew with them till present day TCN. So they won’t understand what it means to finish with a bachelors degree and still not find a job, then try to further to a masters degree with the thought of a good job, yet nothing.
I gave a little thought to that argument I had with my dad and I found out that we can’t really blame their generation for not doing anything. My dad was a toddler when the civil war broke out, and my dad as an Igbo man said it wasn’t funny during that time. Basically they saw what happens when you rebel and they obviously don’t want to have that experience again. When I was in my first year at the university, I went for a political science lecture one day and saw the faculty empty this particular day; apparently it was announced that there would be no class that day so I was about going back to the hostel but I decided to buy something to eat first. While I was sitting and eating in front of the faculty, a shuttle packed and guys were jumping out of the shuttle door and windows with weapons chanting, they all had white shirt on but some of them had something like blood stains on their shirt. I was petrified, that was the highest form of fear I have ever felt. I literally ran to the hostel, on my way I saw more guys with blood and dust stains everywhere. When I got to the hostel it was in chaos, then a circular was brought that we should vacate the school premises. It was on the news and all, my phone was buzzing. My family were obviously really worried, I had to walk through a very long and bushy path with my luggage on my head to leave the school (thanks to some friends) because the entrance of the school was still in chaos. What happened was that, there was no water supply for about a week so a peaceful protest was organized in that order, but fire was opened which killed and left a number of students injured. We were home for 3 months or more and when we were asked to resume, we were told to come with a letter of attestation signed by our religious leaders saying we were good children and we would never try what we did again, some students were expelled and the post of S.U.G was dissolved, it was classified as cultism (ridiculous right?) we were the victims yet… after that we could endure a whole session without water supply and no one would rebel. We all just wanted to successfully gain a degree. I don’t even know the names of the people that was killed that day.
With Nigeria it’s always something new right from money being swallowed by a snake, rodents in Aso rock, trust me I don’t get amazed anymore. The current mishap is youths being brutalized by the same institution that was created to keep us safe, because we look good. The #EndSARS movement is a good cause, but have we stopped to think of this in the long run. Now that it has been dissolved we would have more idle, angry and agile people with no means of income or livelihood. And I am sure most of their weapons would not be confiscated leaving these angry people with the only option they think they have or at best they would be rehired into other units and the cycle continues, so we haven’t won atall.
I have always thought of one day going into politics and changing the system in the little way I can. Nigerians are too selfish, myopic and sentimental, we let our religion, tribe and other things cloud our judgement of what is right and wrong we don’t see the bigger picture. So we are all the same weather we like it or not, our environment has influence our way of thinking. We need to address the main problem or else every other effort we make would be like taking one step forward, then fifteen step backwards. Please don’t ask me what the problem is because I don’t know. Writing about this has given me a migraine 😤.
