Overcoming Fear

Overcoming Fear

Fear is a natural, powerful, and primitive human emotion, fear alerts us to the presence of danger or the threat of harm, whether that danger is physical or psychological. Fear is actually very useful to us humans, it is an important response to physical and emotional danger, if we didn’t feel it we wouldn’t protect ourselves from actual threats. But sometimes we go over board with the fear thing and it stops us from experiencing the beautiful things life has to offer.

Well I have lived in fear almost all my life, lol everything about life scares the shit out of me and I know I am not the only one who feels this way. I behave like I know what I am doing most of the time but trust me I am “chopping confuse” 90% of the time, and it is alright to be scared, like I mentioned earlier fear is necessary it enables us with the ability to protect ourselves from harm. I am scared of a lot of things, I am scared of falling, failing, moving vehicles, pepper scares me to death especially that black powdered pepper, whenever I cook with it I end up with one or every part of my body stinging, but my fear for it makes me extra careful by putting on an armor before putting it into the food or I just take a thorough shower afterwards (well that is if I don’t see anyone to help me add it). Basically fear forces us to focus on areas of our lives which our instincts tell us needs our attention, be it a problem in the workplace, school or a bad relationship, like my fear of pepper makes me focus on my hygiene. Problems which needs to be addressed, it forces us into extreme concentration and helps us to shed distractions. Scientist have also proven that fear can give us “super power” like my ability to dodge the sting of the pepper (I don’t care what you guys think its a super power) or the ability to lift heavy objects when really scared.

Fear in the right dose can be a friend, but too much can pervade your life. The natural process is that danger triggers fear, and after the danger is gone the fear subsides, but if it continues after the danger is gone it means there might be a problem, in extreme cases it means anxiety. So i have this huge fear for failing or being rejected in anything I do, so i usually don’t even try any new thing or i over work myself and stress over little things. Not all of us suffer from anxiety, but fear certainly has the potential to hold us back in life.

Monica Berg in her book “fear is not an option” wrote “if we live a risk averse existence because of fear, we also live a joy averse existence”. The life you live depends on the choices you make and the risk you take, they are the very ingredients in the recipe called happiness. Arianne Huffington, founder of the Huffington post said “failure is not the opposite of success but a stepping stone to success”. one of the ways to get rid of fear is facing it head on, apply for that job, take that trip, talk to that girl or boy, who knows you might get exactly what you want. I use my fears as a drive, my fear of failing makes me want to be a better person and learn something new everyday, don’t let your fear throw you off balance. You are more than you give yourself credit for.
